Title IX: Female Athletics
We began thinking of topics we could relate to and chose women's rights. From there we narrowed our choices down according to our personal interests and chose women's rights in sports. Specifically we chose to do the sports related part of Title IX.
Once we decided to do Title IX, we began reading up on the topic. We researched some background information to learn about Title IX, and what it was. After we had a general idea of what Title IX was all about, we decided to research specific elements of the Title IX movement. We researched what women's sports were like prior to Title IX and then how they changed once Title IX came into effect. We needed to know how the idea of Title IX originated, and we discovered Bernice Sandler. Once we gathered information on Bernice Sandler we visited the school library for books on women's sports after Title IX. We organized our information into two different essays about Title IX. From there we pulled out our information and began putting it into website form. We also began looking for pictures and videos related to Title IX, and sexual discrimination against female athletes. We were able to find different information, pictures, and videos related to our topic because Title IX's 40th anniversary recently passed, and caused an uproar in the sports world.
We chose the website category because we felt that we could be more creative on a website. We could insert different pictures and videos and make it unique to us. A website was easier for both of us to access and edit as partners, whereas it would have been harder for both of us to work on any other category if we were separated.
Title IX was a turning point in women's history. Title IX made it illegal for someone to be discriminated against based on their sex, and this included women not being able to play sports on the same level as men. This new law gave female athletes the same rights as male athletes. Women were able to form their own official competitive to play sports in, they were funded money to play sports, and were given more media and fan attention. After Title IX, men and women were given fair and equal treatment. The differences between female athletics prior to 1972 and female athletics now are extreme. These significant changes in women's sports would not have occurred if it weren't for Title IX, and without it, female athletes would not be where they are today.
